Why can't I sell NFTs?

A common scenario: someone decides to try their hand at creating an NFT. They spend a ton of time and effort on the project, gain approval from their inner—and harsh—critic, and then put it out there for all to see. The plan is for the budding artist's work to spread across the internet, attract collectors, and garner a ton of fame. At least they want to earn some money; they've gotten hungry while working. So where are the buyers?

Generating interest in your art is no easy task. Especially if the goal isn't just to attract attention but also to sell it, preferably for a price the artist is happy with. What could get in the way of this? Let's find out.

1. Lack of admirers

Unfortunately, creating an NFT isn't enough. Despite the wealth of choice available today, people are rarely interested in simply buying a picture. Joy and satisfaction come from owning something unique and memorable. Collectors want something that shares their values and interests, preferably something associated with someone they find interesting. Ideally, the work should be supported by several points, and let's focus on the last one.

People are more likely to buy from someone with a face, preferably a familiar one, and even better, a face they like. So, to start, create your own community on social media: Instagram, Twitter, Discord – connect, find like-minded people.

Fans of a band will travel hundreds of kilometers to see them perform live. Bloggers' readers are willing to buy information products to support their idols. Connoisseurs will pay millions for a painting by a famous artist—famous, that's the key word. People are much more willing to buy a trinket from someone they admire than a masterpiece from an unknown. And this is worth paying attention to.

Become that person. Don't just gain followers, but create a community of admirers who are willing to invest in the opportunity to have something in common with you.

Moreover, being active on social media will increase your credibility with potential buyers. We discussed this in our previous article – weak social media activity and a lack of author information can be a sign offraud.

2. Inactive community or language barrier

Don't just create accounts; grow your community and strengthen your connections with other users. People want to feel part of something vibrant and interesting, and if they join a deserted, silent Discord channel, they're likely to leave.

You'll be able to grow your following more easily if more people around the world can understand you and what you're trying to convey through your art. You don't necessarily have to manage your social media in English or another international language if you don't want to. But the benefits are clear.

3. Inappropriate price

The price of an NFT doesn't increase based on the amount of time invested, and certainly not on the artist's subjective assessment. What matters most isn't how much you want to receive, but rather how much a potential buyer is willing to pay for the work. In this case, the value of an NFT grows proportionally to your value as a creator, which brings us back to the first point: the presence of a community.

At the same time, for other users to be interested in purchasing your work, its value must be at least slightly higher than the price. Buyers choose NFTs that they can later sell for more than the initial investment. Set a price that makes the transaction profitable for both parties.

4. Low uniqueness of NFTs

No matter how subjectively creativity is assessed, it is worth trying to convince collectors that your work is unique, valuable and worthy.

Perhaps a collection is struggling to sell because each individual NFT isn't unique enough? If one work is suspiciously similar to another, if they blend not only with a plethora of NFTs from other artists but also with each other, how will it attract a buyer? Let each piece in the collection have its own unique character, but tie it together with the others through a common theme or style.

5. Lack of experience purchasing NFTs

A good seller is an experienced buyer. Before becoming a creator, try the other side of this world. Find people you find interesting, join their communities, and try to buy their work.

It's crucial to understand how your subscriber-buyer thinks and feels so you can know what to offer them later. Moreover, this way, you'll not only gain experience but also meet people who might later support your work.

We see that selling NFTs requires promoting yourself on social media.
