Internet users' search interests in 2009

Yandex has released rankings of Ukrainian user search interests for 2009, as well as New Year's search interests.

New Year's was the most popular topic for Ukrainian Yandex users in 2009. In preparation for the holiday, Ukrainians generated over 1.5 million queries in a short period of time. They searched for, for example, New Year's greetings, SMS messages, toasts, and poems. Judging by search queries, many users were planning to prepare squid salad, duck with oranges, Christmas turkey, and goose with apples. Pomegranate bracelet salad and Caesar dressing were also frequently searched for, but there wasn't much interest in the Olivier salad recipe—it's likely already familiar to everyone.

The next places in the ranking are occupied by the Eurovision Song Contest 2009, which took place in May (more than 1 million requests) and two computer games - GTA 4 and The Sims 3 (426 and 336 thousand requests, respectively).

Homework assignments also made it into the top 10 annual search interests. Interest in them spiked in September, with the start of the school year, then gradually declined, but then surged again after the holidays and quarantine.

The remaining positions in the top 30 charts are less diverse. Six spots in the top 30 are attributed to holidays, and three to sporting events. Another 10 top spots are attributed to major film premieres. Judging by the increase in Yandex search queries, "Ice Age 3" was the film of the year. "High Security Vacation" is in second place, and "Avatar" is in third, despite the film only being released at the end of December. Therefore, "Avatar" has every chance of becoming the film of 2010.

In addition to holidays, school, sports, and entertainment, Ukrainians in 2009 were interested in the most notable news events, such as swine flu, the epidemic in Ukraine, and the death of Michael Jackson.
