Email users in the .РФ domain zone received their first spam.
Kaspersky Lab published a report on spam activity for January 2011. Since December, the share of spam in email traffic has increased by only 0.5%, reaching 77.6%.
It was previously believed that owners of mailboxes in the .РФ domain zone were largely immune to spam, but January's results showed something quite different.
Kaspersky Lab researchers believed that spammers were using .РФ domains as a platform for hosting their resources. Now it turns out their databases have been updated with the addresses of users whose mailboxes are located in the Cyrillic domain zone. Some emails sent to these addresses were in English, and many offered advertising. Therefore, users cannot expect to be free of spam in this domain zone either. While the volume of spam in the .РФ zone is currently low, experts predict it will increase.
