A VKontakte user's domain was stripped in favor of the administration.

A user of the social network VKontakte was stripped of a subdomain they had previously received. This situation differs from previous similar situations in that the user lost a subdomain they had previously purchased.

According to Mikhail Melnik, the victim, he purchased the "club" subdomain for 35,000 rubles in the summer of 2009, intending to use it to promote a social game. However, the game's development was later delayed. On February 24, 2011, Andrey Rogozov, head of development at VKontakte, wrote to Mikhail asking him to return the subdomain, as the social network needed it for its group service, in exchange for any other available four-character subdomain.

Mikhail Melnik stated that he would like the social network to compensate him for the loss, but in a different way than through an alternative subdomain. However, he is not concerned about the amount spent on the subdomain, but rather about the administration's behavior towards users.

Mikhail has now received back 5,000 "votes," but he hasn't yet decided whether to take up the offer to choose a new subdomain.
