REG.RU supports the connection of IP addresses in IPv6 format in the national domains .РФ, .RU, .SU
Since the end of February, in response to the global shortage of IPv4 addresses, Russian domain name registrar REG.RU has been offering its clients the opportunity to connect IPv6 IP addresses in the national domains .РФ, .RU, and .SU.
IPv6 (Internet Protocol version 6) is a new version of the fundamental internet protocol that addresses the problem of IP address shortage. Previously, IPv4 was used by all devices on the internet, but it ran out of available addresses. In early February 2011, the last five blocks of IPv4 addresses were distributed in Miami among five regional registries: AfriNIC (Africa), ARIN (USA, Canada), APNIC (Asia and Oceania), LACNIC (Latin America), and RIPE NIC (Europe, Middle East, and Central Asia).
The length of each IP address in the new version is 128 bits, up from 32 bits in the previous version, allowing for a significant increase in address space. IPv6 is expected to support more levels of network hierarchy and optimize address space distribution in terms of routing and configuration. While IPv6 won't yet match the reach of IPv4, which has 4 billion addresses, the new version is already in use in several thousand networks worldwide.
The Internet Technical Center (ITC), responsible for the smooth operation of domain addressing in the Russian segment of the global internet, has enabled IPv6 support for the .РФ, .RU, and .SU domains. REG.RU quickly supported the TCI's initiative and provided its clients with the ability to connect IPv6 addresses for domains registered in the .РФ, .RU, and .SU zones. "The transition to IPv6 is a significant event for the World Wide Web, and we are ready to make every effort to ensure a gradual and seamless transition to the new protocol for our clients and Russian internet users," emphasized Alexey Korolyuk, CEO of REG.RU.
In support of IPv6 implementation, REG.RU will participate in International IPv6 Day, initiated by the Internet Society (ISOC) and scheduled for June 8, 2011. On this day, leading internet companies will provide access to their main websites using both IPv6 and IPv4 for 24 hours. This event aims to unite the efforts of all internet community members to implement IPv6 with minimal disruption.
