Registrars warn of domain fraud
ICANN and several domain name registrars are reporting that a new scam targeting users of registrar companies has become widespread online.
The scam uses a phishing mechanism. The attackers searched for domains whose registrations were about to expire. They then sent the domain owners fake messages about the urgent need to renew their domains.
In this case, the payment details provided were false.
Technically, this type of attack is not difficult to implement, but it was the first time it was used to take over domains.
You can protect yourself from fraudsters only by verifying the registrar's information and payment details by any means necessary, such as by phone.
