Russia has defined the procedure for applications for geographic domains under the New gTLD.

The Coordination Center for National Domain Names (NTD) of the Internet Network reports that geographic top-level domains can only be obtained with the support of the authorities of the territory whose name the zone will share: "Domains representing specific territories—cities, regions, and geographic zones—are subject to more stringent requirements than new top-level domains. Thus, to obtain the right to manage such a domain, the future registry must, among other things, secure the support of the authorities of the relevant regions or countries."

Russia is currently applying for two geographic top-level domains for its capital, .moscow and .москва. The Foundation for Assistance for Internet Technology and Infrastructure Development will administer these new domains. This organization is currently preparing applications for the new domains and plans to submit them to ICANN at the end of March.

As a reminder, ICANN is accepting applications for new top-level domains from January 12 to April 12, 2012. Currently, ICANN has received applications from 144 legal entities.
