RuNet plans to introduce improved domain protection

By the end of 2011, a cryptographic domain protection system will be introduced on the RuNet. This will improve surfing security and reduce the likelihood of users accessing unwanted websites.

A new cryptographic domain protection system will protect against web server request interception and limit user redirection to malicious resources. Every request sent to the server will be encrypted using a cryptographic protocol, making it impossible for malware to intercept requests.

Testing of cryptographic protection for domain names has currently begun in domain zones in Switzerland and Bulgaria. If successful, this system will be implemented in other domain zones, including .RU, .РФ, and .SU.

However, there are a number of challenges in implementing this type of protection. The first is the need to replace the routers used by providers. Such an upgrade would cost providers $100 million.

However, a new cryptographic domain protection system will effectively combat many viruses, such as the infamous Conficker. Experts note that the implementation of such a system will take at least two years.
