How Fast Food Chains Are Using Web3 Technologies
New technologies are gradually penetrating various business sectors. We've already written about how tokens are being used globally.fashionThe food service industry is no exception. Many major fast food chains launched their NFTs in early 2021, just as their popularity was rapidly growing. McDonald's
In October 2021, the company's Chinese branch issued 188 "Big Mac Rubik's Cube" NFTs to celebrate the 31st anniversary of operations in China and the opening of its new headquarters in Shanghai. Another reason for releasing the "Big Mac Rubik's Cube" was the company's latest move into the digital space, which involved accepting Bitcoin as a payment method at restaurants in El Salvador. The NFTs were intended as gifts for lucky employees and customers and were minted on the Conflux Network blockchain.
Customers and employees are expecting McDonald's to go further and release NFTs featuring its iconic Big Mac or McRib products.
Burger King
Burger King has taken technology a step further by adding QR codes to its products to unlock collectible gaming pieces.
The code on each box offered the chance to receive one of three NFT parts. Collecting three parts earned the customer the NFT. The token, in turn, granted access to special prizes. These could be something as simple as a 3D digital collectible, or more tangible, like a free Whopper sandwich for a year or postcards autographed by famous people. Prizes and gifts are known to be a great way to engage with customers and attract new audiences. And prizes using new technologies are an opportunity to attract young and active customers.
Starbucks
This chain, which has one of the most popular customer loyalty cards, has also included NFTs in its customer engagement program.
Starbucks unveiled Starbucks Odyssey, a new project powered by Web3 technology. Project participants, Starbucks Rewards members, and Starbucks employees in the US will be able to earn NFTs, which in turn will unlock access to a digital community with various benefits. Starting September 12, 2022, customers and partners can join the waitlist at waitlist.starbucks.com for a chance to participate in Starbucks Odyssey, scheduled to launch later this year.
Taco Bell
Taco Bell was one of the first major brands to launch NFTs back in March 2021. Their collection consisted of 25 taco-themed NFTs. Four of the five designs were animated GIFs. Proceeds from sales went to the Live Más scholarship through the Taco Bell Foundation.
The first Taco Bell NFT owner received access to a $500 digital gift card. Unsurprisingly, the NFTs sold out within 30 minutes of going on sale.
Another interesting idea from Taco Bell is to attach electronic gift cards to NFTs. This already offers a wide range of options for customer interaction and participation in rewards programs.retention of old And attracting newclients.
Resume
Many fast food brands are experimenting with Web3 technologies for marketing and customer engagement. NFTs are typically used as an element of a marketing strategy, not as a key component. Starbucks Odyssey is perhaps the most striking example of Web3 technology being used. By the end of the year, the effectiveness of this new campaign will become clear.
But the trend toward embracing new technologies is clearly evident among many food service companies. The novelty of NFT technology and its terminology is gradually fading. Over time, it could gain a powerful boost when the primary focus ceases to be the issuance of NFTs per se, and instead, new creative ways to engage with customers and ensure value for NFT use are found. This, in turn, will become another way to stimulate business profitability. It's important to remember that in food service establishments, the primary...
