On the power of joint action
I remember well the feeling I experienced when I watched it.Stand By Me videoThe Playing For Change project. Such diverse people, from all corners of the world, create a magical sound in a collaborative song. And the idea was brought to life thanks to modern technology.
A few years ago, I found myself in the United States and spent a lot of time with other students from different countries who had come for the summer. We were working together—my friend and I from Ukraine, Timur from Russia, Shaz from Sri Lanka, Luna and Shmriti from Nepal, Cristina from Romania, and Ben, an American. We talked about everything: life, people. I took this interaction for granted, until one day I realized: these guys and I grew up in completely different countries, speak different languages, and just a month ago we were in a completely different, culturally and socially distinct environment. And yet, we don't notice it. We are so similar!
The feeling of unity with different continents and countries that I felt then gave me a delight that I still have today.
We are all very similar. The only thing that separates us is our circumstances: some were born on the streets of Colombo, others in Dnipropetrovsk. But once we find ourselves in the same circumstances, we stop noticing this difference.
So, circumstances can bring us together. Remember how fun and interesting it was with your classmates at university? Yes, the same ones you don't talk to now. You didn't stop talking because you became less interesting people; you just ended your studies together and disappeared.circumstances, uniting you.
The man sitting next to you is unshaven and not particularly attractive, yet he's someone's father and beloved husband. And your father is also riding in some other minibus, and for someone else, he's also just "that unshaven guy." It's just that circumstances don't connect him with the woman sitting next to him. But they do connect you.
When we started thinking about the idea for a New Year's campaign on NIC.UA, we were most inspired by the theme of uniting people.
Last year, in a similar New Year's campaign, people sent us their stories under the headingFrom Domain to SuccessWe asked them to tell us how purchasing a domain changed their lives—whether they launched a project, started a business—in short, we asked them to describe their success story. Then, rereadingevery storyWe were pleasantly surprised by how many interesting projects, remarkable people, and compelling life stories are hidden behind the domains registered on NIC.UA. We were filled with respect and admiration for our clients.
This year we wanted to come up with some kind of joint action -those same general circumstances, which will unite. This is how the idea of a postcard was born, small fragments of which will be colored by different people.
When individual musicians play a common melody, they form an orchestra. It's easy to break a bunch of twigs lying around, but it's very difficult to break a broom. If everyone picks up a little trash on the road, the city will be cleaner.
We suggest you color a piece of paper. Perhaps just one color. Perhaps your fragment will have a whimsical pattern—it's up to you. Get your fragment, color it, and watch how it becomes part oflarge New Year's card- the one that was drawn by many, many people.
