The US and the EU may lose influence over ICANN.

Changes to the geographic distribution of ICANN's board of directors are currently being considered. If adopted, this change may exclude representatives from the United States and the European Union from the board.

The ICANN Board of Directors is composed of representatives from all countries worldwide. Countries are divided into regions. Each region must have at least one representative on the Board of Directors, but no more than five.

Now, plans are underway to change the distribution of countries across regions. The North American region will gain a number of new states—Jamaica, Barbados, the Cayman Islands, and several others. This means that representatives from the United States may not be included in ICANN.

In the same way, it is planned to change the borders of the Europe region, which will include the countries of the Middle East.

This also means that candidates from EU countries may lose their seat on the ICANN Board of Directors.

The new regional boundaries will align with the areas of influence of regional internet registries (RIRs), which distribute IP addresses in their regions.
