African countries want to get their own domain

The African Union member countries are establishing a special coordination center, DotAfrica, whose task will be to obtain and manage the .africa domain extension. The launch of the new domain extension will facilitate business development on the African continent and the development of the internet as a whole.

The African Union currently has 53 member states. An application is planned to be submitted at the upcoming ICANN meeting.

The share of the internet audience on the continent is small – out of 1 billion inhabitants, only 8.6% or 86 million use the internet.
