The court partially upheld Microsoft's claim regarding the windows.ru trademark.

A Moscow court partially upheld Microsoft's lawsuit against Dmitry Shapovalov. The lawsuit concerned the administration of the windows.ru domain. Microsoft claimed that the windows.ru domain infringed its exclusive trademark rights.

The court permitted the defendant to use the windows.ru trademark for plastic windows. However, the court prohibited Shapovalov from using the trademark for goods and services in Class 9—equipment, hardware, and disks.

Both parties to the trial are prepared to appeal the court's decision.

Dmitry Shapovalov registered the domain in 1998. At the time, he was manufacturing plastic windows. In 2003, Shapovalov sold his business but retained the rights to the domain name.

In 2010, Microsoft demanded that he stop using windows.ru. After Shapovalov refused, Microsoft filed a lawsuit against him.
