The court allowed Amazon to use the name "Appstore".
The U.S. District Court for Northern California has granted Amazon permission to use the name "Appstore." Apple had previously sought an injunction against the use of the word, arguing that the existence of two stores, one named "App Store," would confuse consumers.
However, the federal judge noted that she did not consider the terms "App Store" or "Appstore" to be common usage, which was precisely the wording Amazon had insisted on.
In March of this year, Amazon launched an app store for the Android mobile platform. The store was called the Amazon Appstore. Apple sued Amazon, claiming that the use of the terms "App Store" or "Appstore" by another company infringed Apple's intellectual property rights.
In addition to Amazon, other companies also opposed Apple's use of the term "App Store," including Microsoft, Sony Ericsson, Nokia, and HTC.
