How does Google Trends work?

Looking at the graph, you might think it reflects the number of user queries per unit of time. This isn't entirely true. The curve reflects the relative popularity of the query. This is an indicator that takes into account the time and location of queries, but it doesn't reflect a direct relationship.

The indicator is determined on a 100-point scale, based on the ratio of the selected query to the total number of search engine queries.

Google Trends ignores repeated queries from the same user, which makes it difficult to artificially influence rankings, and does not take into account low-frequency queries, which are considered equal to 0.

How is Google Trends useful in marketing?

When working on website optimization for keywords, it is important to take into account certain metrics that Google Trends can provide insight into.

Seasonality and localization

It's probably undeniable that the popularity of certain events, objects, and phenomena depends largely on the time of year. For example, we start talking about Christmas closer to December. And the number of related search queries in December peaks.

By the way, an interesting observation: the search query "Christmas" is more popular in western Ukraine.

In the eastern regions, New Year's themes are more popular. The regions most interested in New Year's themes are Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Mykolaiv, and Kharkiv.

Using Google Trends, you can track seasonal changes in the peaks and declines in the popularity of queries on your topic, taking into account territorial characteristics.

The country, city, and region where a search query is most and least popular provides clues as to where your business's products are most in demand. This is where you should target your ads.

There are two ways to use the data obtained from Google Trends:

  • Create relevant contentapproaching peak points. For example, publish materials like "How to Prepare Your Home for Christmas" or "How to Choose Gifts for the Whole Family" starting in early November. Around this time, your target audience begins to become interested in the topic.
  • Optimize previously published relevant pages. If your website has previously published content like "How to Prepare Your Home for Christmas" or has a page selling Christmas decorations, it's a good idea to prioritize them for search engines a couple of months before the expected peak. By doing this, for example, in October, you'll see a significant boost in the rankings of your selected pages by December.

Relevance of the topic

Composingcontent planFor a website, it's worth checking the topic's relevance in Google Trends. Is it popular enough with users? Otherwise, you could waste time writing content that's losing or has already lost its relevance. This means the material won't attract users to the site.

Trending queries

Look for queries with a significant jump in popularity over the last 24 hours, regardless of localization. To do this, select "Popular Search Queries" from the drop-down menu in the upper left corner.

If you see a trending topic and it resonates with your business, it's worth paying attention. Typically, a topic "plays" for a few days, with the peak of discussion occurring the day after the event.

Content planning

There are times when a topic is especially relevant on a peak day. Typically, these are theme days: Volunteer Day, Father's Day, Mother's Day, etc.

In this case, not preparing the content in advance would be a mistake.

You can use peak search queries from previous years as a guide. To do this, look at the query's popularity statistics for five years. Typically, interest increases about a week before the big day. By this time, it's time to prepare new content, update an existing page with relevant material, adding new data and a few relevant facts or figures. And prioritize it.

Similar topics

If you scroll down the statistics page for a particular query, you can see a list of similar queries that users are searching for.

There are two options for viewing related queries: "Most Popular" and "Rising." By clicking the question mark next to "Similar Topics," you can see the differences between the two options. This option will help you expand your list of keywords and understand what users are currently most interested in.

You can also look at similar topics for similar topics to further expand the list of possible queries.

Using "related topics," you can see your competitors, analyze their tactics, and choose the best ones to use for your own. To do this, enter your brand name in the Google Trends search bar and use similar topics to see what other users in your niche are searching for. These users are also your potential customers.

Search queries for YouTube

Some users prefer video content to text. And some topics are more easily learned through video tutorials. Therefore, it's worth looking at the popularity of search queries you're interested in specifically for YouTube videos. Google Trends offers this feature, especially since it's easy to do.

Once you've verified that your query is popular on YouTube, you can create your own video to rank for that query.
