Torrent tracker stripped of domain

From February 20 to 21, problems were recorded at two Ukrainian domain name administrators: the companies "Coordinator" and "Comstar-Ukraine".

Problems started on Saturday, February 20th with the websitehttp://eunic.net.ua, which maintains the EUNIC registry. On that day, neither clients nor registrars were able to use the website.

The issue may be related to the latest news on the website coordinator.net.ua, which states that automated application processing will be introduced starting February 20. Until then, all applications were processed semi-automatically, and the delay in registering and changing domain names was up to 10 days.

Later, namely on February 21 at around 0:30 a.m., problems began with the networks of the large Internet provider Comstar-Ukraine (better known as Telesystems), which maintains the registry of the public domain IN.UA.

The provider's network was unavailable for several hours, which caused problems accessing the registry and whois service.

As of 10:00 AM on February 21, 2010, no further problems were reported.

Today, users of the sitetorrents.ruWe saw a message on the homepage stating that the domain name torrents.ru no longer belonged to its owners. According to the message on the website's homepage, the domain was deregistered by its registrar, Ru-Center.

The owners of torrents.ru quickly migrated the site to rutracker.org and informed users which settings they needed to change to ensure the torrent tracker worked properly. Now, when attempting to open torrents.ru, they are redirected tohttp://rutracker.org/.

The owners of torrents.ru emphasize that all domain renewal documents were submitted on time. Ru-Center representatives have not yet commented on the situation.

The deregistration of the torrents.ru domain is a precedent for the RuNet—an example of serious measures to combat illegal content.
