VeriSign has proposed creating a domain exchange service.

VeriSign, the administrator of the .COM and .NET domains, has proposed creating a "Domain Exchange Service." This proposal was submitted to the ICANN board.

The "Domain Exchange Service" will allow its clients to sell or exchange domain names that they no longer need.

Currently, domains that clients don't need are held by the registrar for at least a month. This places an additional financial burden on the registrar. The "Domain Exchange Service" will allow the registrar to transfer such domains to other companies or clients without the need to re-register them.

To protect domain owners from potential violations, VeriSign offers to allow domain exchanges within 30 days, publish a list of domains subject to exchange, and create a special record in the WHOIS/WHOWAS databases for domains transferred using this service.

As an experiment, the "Domain Exchange Service" will work for the .NET domain zone.
