Verisign suffers from hacker attacks
According to the US Department of Homeland Security, Verisign, the world's largest DNS operator, is the target of ongoing hacker attacks. Some of these attacks have been successful, allowing hackers to penetrate the company's internal networks.
Verisign is the administrator of the .COM and .NET domains, and Verisign also maintains several Internet root domain servers.
Security experts note that successful attacks on Verisign's network infrastructure could be particularly dangerous, as hackers could theoretically alter the data for virtually any given name and website. Verisign's servers handle approximately 50 billion requests daily.
No public information has been released about the investigation into the Verisign hack, but the US Department of Homeland Security and the CIA are known to be examining the details.
Another possible reason for the attacks on Verisign is that the company is the world's largest provider of SSL certificates. By forging such a certificate, attackers can redirect users to other resources.
