Payment tokens or cryptocurrencies. Used to buy and sell assets and pay fees for blockchain-based transactions without the need for an intermediary.

Examples:

  • Bitcoin (BTC) is considered the first cryptocurrency in history. It is used exclusively as a decentralized form of payment for digital and physical goods and services.
  • Ethereum (ETH) is the native token of the Ethereum blockchain. It is used as a means of payment for purchases both in the Web3 space and in the real world.
  • Solana (SOL) is used to pay for digital assets and transaction fees on the Solana network. It is considered a competitor to Ethereum due to its speed and low transaction costs.

2. Non-fungible token (NFT)

The most well-known crypto token. It is a cryptographic asset created using blockchain technology.NFTcannot be exchanged like other tokens, since each of them is unique in its own way, and therefore has its own special value.

NFTs are present inin different areasour lives and represent value in both physical and digital spaces. They provide owners with a wide range of benefits, including access to physical and digital goods and events.

3. Stablecoin

A stablecoin is a type of cryptocurrency pegged to a fiat currency, such as the US dollar. The goal of creating a stablecoin is to provide a more stable and less volatile alternative to other cryptocurrencies.

Stablecoins are often used to pay for goods and services. They are convenient for international transactions. Due to their relatively low transaction fees, they can be an alternative to popular money transfer services such as PayPal.

Examples:

  • Tether (USDT) is the most well-known stablecoin pegged to the US dollar. Tether was created as a stable and transparent alternative to traditional fiat currencies for use in cryptocurrency transactions.
  • USDC is another stablecoin pegged to the US dollar. It is designed to provide collateral and is issued by many companies, including Circle and Coinbase.

4. Decentralized Token (Defi Token)

Decentralized tokens are created for use with decentralized platforms powered by smart contracts. Defi tokens are used on decentralized exchanges, as collateral for loans, for trading liquidity, for yield farming, and for digital wallets and NFTs.

Examples:

  • Chainlink (LINK) enables smart contracts to securely connect to external .
  • Aave (AAVE) allows users to lend and borrow various cryptocurrencies through a decentralized lending platform that utilizes a unique liquidity pool model.

5. Utility Token

Utility tokens, also known as "digital coupons," provide access to certain products and services. These tokens are typically distributed during initial public sales.

They can entitle you to real discounts in the physical world, for example, on a particular product, service, or access to an event.

Unlike NFTs, utility tokens are fungible. They can be exchanged for another token of the same type or equal value.

Examples:

  • ApeCoin (APE) is a token created specifically for the Bored Ape Yacht Club ecosystem. It allows holders to participate in project governance voting and provides access to member-only features.
  • Decentraland (MANA) is a payment token for the virtual world of Decentraland. It is primarily used to purchase LAND and other virtual goods in the game.

6. Security Token

Security tokens are digital assets that represent ownership or a stake in a real company or asset. Essentially, these tokens replace traditional investment vehicles such as stocks or bonds.

The main difference from real papers is that information about these tokens is stored in a publicly accessible blockchain registry.

Examples:

  • BCAP is an Ethereum-based smart contract token and Blockchain Capital's first tokenized venture fund.
  • EXOD acts as a digital representation of the Class A common stock of Exodus Movement.

7. Privacy Coin

Unlike traditional cryptocurrencies such as BTC and ETH, privacy coins allow for confidential money transfers. The sender and recipient, the amount, and the date of the transaction remain anonymous. Privacy is typically achieved through the use of a one-time stealth address and the aggregation of multiple transactions into one.

Examples:

  • Zcash (ZEC) is a privacy cryptocurrency that offers users fast speeds and low transaction fees. It uses a security protocol to guarantee privacy.
  • Monero (XMR) is used to pay for goods and services worldwide. It's private and has very low transaction fees.
  • Dash (DASH) is a privacy currency with low transaction fees.

8. Exchange Token

An exchange token is a type of cryptocurrency issued by an exchange. They are used to pay transaction fees on the exchange. Less commonly, they can be used as governance tokens, granting holders voting rights in the platform's governance. These tokens are created to increase exchange liquidity and incentivize users to use the platform.

Examples:

  • Binance USD (BUSD) is issued by the Binance exchange and backed by a reserve of US dollars. It is fully liquid and subject to quarterly audits to ensure the integrity of the reserve. BUSD is often used for trading, payments, and transfers as a store of value.

9. Meme Coin

A meme coin is a cryptocurrency created from the most popular memes and internet jokes. They typically have no initial value and are not backed by underlying assets or additional utility. Their value is determined by the community and depends on the users.

Examples:

  • Dogecoin (DOGE) is the most popular meme coin. Originally created as a joke, it gained traction thanks to Elon Musk. It can be used for payment, but despite its popularity, it is extremely volatile.

  • Shiba Inu (SHIB) is a parody of Dogecoin. It can be used to purchase goods and services within the ecosystem. Beyond that, it's practically useless.
