US authorities oppose the return of the seized pirated Spanish domain.
The legal battle against the US government's seizure of gambling-related domain names continues. Federal prosecutors are asking a judge not to return the domain names of one of Spain's most popular websites, which were seized in the US government's crackdown on online piracy.
In this case, the popular website Rojadirecta.com is at issue. However, since early 2010, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement has seized more than 200 domains accused by authorities of involvement in intellectual property fraud. These court-ordered seizures include websites selling counterfeit goods, as well as sites illegally distributing music and movies, and hosting pirated streams. The story of Rojadirecta.com demonstrates that the owners of such domains will likely never regain control.
