How new domains appeared
At the 41st ICANN meeting in 2011 in Singapore, the New gTLD program was approved. In 2012, applications were opened for anyone wishing to become a domain administrator.
ICANN expected to receive approximately 500 applications for the delegation of new domains. Despite the high application fee of $185,000 per domain, and the extensive list of conditions that applicants had to meet, ICANN received nearly 2,000 applications! The corporation even extended the deadline for domain delegations, as the processing of the huge number of applications required additional time.
Many applicants applied for identical top-level domains. The most popular application was for the .APP domain, with 13 companies submitting applications.
