Apostrophes can be used in Ukrainian domains.

Starting from June 1, 2012, the Ukrainian apostrophe can be used in IDN domains. The first Ukrainian registrar to allow the use of the apostrophe for domain registration wasNIC.UAYou can register names with an apostrophe in the .COM.UA, .KIEV.UA, .CO.UA, .BIZ.UA, and .PP.UA domains.

Currently, domains with apostrophes such as мʼякий.kiev.ua, імʼя.com.ua, мʼяco.com.ua, as well as ʼʼдʼʼ.com.ua and ʼӂʼ.com.ua have already been registered. The last two examples show how domains can be humorously played with using apostrophes and unique Cyrillic characters.

You cannot register a domain name with only one apostrophe, but you can register a domain name that uses both apostrophes and letters, for example, several apostrophes and one letter (as in the example above), according to the rules, the domain must contain at least one unique Cyrillic character along with the apostrophe.

There are actually several apostrophe characters in the ASCII character set.

For example, the well-known method for entering an apostrophe in Word—holding down the Ctrl key and double-pressing the "э" key—doesn't result in entering the apostrophe itself. Instead, it allows you to enter the apostrophe symbol, which has the code U+0027, and the apostrophe symbol's code is U+02BC. The apostrophe symbol is often used as an abbreviation in English words, such as "I'm," as well as in a number of other languages, such as French, Serbian, and German. In Ukrainian words, the apostrophe symbol must be used.

To enter the correct apostrophe on the keyboard in the Windows operating system, you need to type the key combination ALT+700 (the numbers must be entered on the right numeric keypad with the Num Lock key on).

The need to introduce the apostrophe into domain names has been discussed for several months, ever since the first Cyrillic domains appeared. The apostrophe's implementation was actively discussed in the ICANN Cyrillic Domains Working Group, among whose members were representatives from Ukraine, who actively pushed for its implementation.

Let us recall that in September 2011, specialists from the Ukrainian Network Information Center (UNIC)sent a letter to ICANN regarding the use of the apostrophe symbol in domain names. A Testing the apostrophe in Ukrainian IDN domainswas held in October 2011.
