The brand's good name

The business reputation of a commercial company, person, or brand is a crucial factor in its survival in the business world. A good reputation can help you gain a larger market share, which means more clients and offers. And, of course, more money. A bad reputation precludes all of these opportunities and hinders development. Conclusion: to achieve success, it's important to cultivate a positive reputation.

What is goodwill?

Goodwill (literally translated as "good will") is a company's business reputation and image. In a broad sense, it is an intangible asset of a company. Its importance is most acute during the preparation and conclusion of a business purchase or sale transaction.

For example, you're aiming to acquire company X. Its value is, say, 30 million UAH. But the asset reserve on the balance sheet is only 10 million UAH. What will you have to pay for this difference? For the brand's popularity. For the fact that it's loved and respected. For the recognizable positive image that attracts and retains customers.

Badville

The opposite of goodwill is a bad business reputation. Does anyone want to deal with an unscrupulous supplier of goods or services? Of course not. Moreover, it's impossible to hide: these days, information spreads like wildfire. A non-customer-focused approach scares off customers. This is a natural consequence, and in such a situation, the business owner is forced to sell the company at a price below the value of the tangible assets. The negative difference between the market and book value of assets is badwill.

So, having a positive business image is much more promising: a good reputation allows for additional benefits. It's important to understand that, in financial terms, the value of these benefits can significantly exceed the value of tangible assets. Therefore, goodwill, like the kindly Goodwin from the well-known fairy tale, can make wishes come true. And in business, everyone's wish is the same: to make as much profit as possible.

Goodwill: what does it consist of?

Goodwill is a multifaceted concept. It includes brand image, recognition, business connections, and, of course, popularity, or consumer appeal.

Goodwill is influenced by the work of all company departments. Social media managers (SMM) and PR specialists play a key role in this process. Building a brand's online reputation is, in essence, their job. And successful success depends on proper information management.

It is important to learn to work with negativity

Goodwill requires constant attention and considerable effort. After all, it needs to be not only nurtured but also protected. And competitors and envious people never sleep. Pursuing their own goals and objectives, they do everything possible to undermine the reputation of a successful brand: they write nasty things on social media, leak negative information to the press. In other words, they try in every way possible to harm.

This is reality, so the strategic challenge is to effectively counteract the onslaught of negativity. It's important to learn how to purposefully improve your brand's online reputation. Comprehensive reputation management techniques and an arsenal of tools for building a "good name" will help with this.

There are quite a few practical online courses that teach:

  • apply techniques to remove negative information from search results;
  • organize work on searching for different types of mentions of a company (or person), process them, and classify them;
  • discuss aggressive commentators correctly;
  • resist black PR, trolling, and consumer extremism;
  • counteract information attacks;
  • build communication with the audience with the goal of forming a pool of loyal subscribers and readers;
  • train employees on appropriate behavior on social media as brand ambassadors;
  • and also carefully prepare content for the implementation of a reputation strategy, use newsworthy events and competently work with positive reviews onwebsiteand on social networks.

Goodwill is needed by everyone

It's not just necessary, it's crucial. And the PR specialist's job is to convincingly convince management of this importance if, for some reason, there's a lack of understanding at the top. Building goodwill and managing reputation is a fundamental task for any company that wants to be competitive and profitable.

Yes, there are managers who are unwilling to spend money on addressing negative feedback, believing that investing in sales will yield greater benefits. But everything in marketing is interconnected. Even if a company is profitable today, there's no guarantee it won't need to be sold tomorrow. And it's difficult to close a successful deal without goodwill. Furthermore, a good reputation can not only increase the selling price of a business but also increase the price of its products and services.

Comprehensive online reputation management, streamlined negative feedback management, and maintaining strong, sustainable goodwill are all tools for increasing a company's value. And abandoning this is, at the very least, strategically short-sighted.
