Team building: what is it and why is it needed?
The pandemic, followed by Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, has disrupted the daily routines of millions of people. Many were forced to switch to remote work and found numerous advantages. It's no wonder: time previously wasted in traffic jams can now be spent sleeping, eating breakfast, or any other useful and enjoyable activity. Work schedules can also be adjusted to suit individual needs. However, after living under these conditions for a while, many come to the conclusion that this is far from ideal. The main problem is the lack of communication, both with people in general and with colleagues directly. Without office interactions, corporate events, and shared lunches, the team becomes a mere gathering of strangers. And this affects not only the overall mood and sense of well-being, but also the quality of work.

Research shows that productivity depends on the mood within a company. If the team is friendly and well-coordinated, employees feel comfortable and enjoy working more. Furthermore, being surrounded by "their own" people makes it much easier to ask for help when needed or to brainstorm solutions to work problems together. This is how the best ideas are born.
But building a cohesive team is difficult, even if the company operates offline, and remotely, it becomes a three-star task. How can you encourage a group of people with different personalities and temperaments to interact with each other? The answer is simple: conduct team-building activities.
What is team building?
Team building, translated from English, means team building. It refers to any activity whose goal is to unite people into a cohesive group and reveal each person's hidden skills. This is often achieved through sports, creative, and psychological training. These activities are designed to encourage the team to work together to overcome challenging situations. This leads to more friendly and trusting relationships, and the habit of working together to solve emerging problems carries over to the workplace.
Team building differs from a typical corporate event. The latter involves colleagues relaxing in an informal setting. It's also a good way to bring employees closer together, although less effective. Team building, on the other hand, is aimed specifically at increasing the effectiveness of teamwork. It also involves stepping outside of your comfort zone and gaining new experiences.
Who needs team building and when?
Whether or not to hold team building events is a personal decision for every manager. If you have a small business with fewer than 10 employees and a tight budget, there's no need to rush. If everyone on the team knows each other and is committed to working together, team building events can be postponed. But if you have the resources, the desire, and your team is growing, consider it. Team building will definitely improve productivity and the quality of work.
Team building is necessary if:
- Employees lack motivation to work. Team building will break up the routine and invigorate the team;
- the team is new, no one knows each other;
- there are conflicts within the team between employees or entire departments;
- the organization is large, different departments are involved in different stages of work and are not familiar with each other;
- the structure of the organization changes, departments change their type of activity or merge.
Where to hold team building events?
There are two main options: holding team building events in the office or moving them to another location.
It'll be cheaper and less hassle to organize in the office. It also takes less time. So you can hold the event without sacrificing your time off or work.
But there's a downside. It's difficult to get into the swing of things in the old location. There's a high chance that the team will be less willing to participate in office team building, more likely to do it just for show.
The second option is more expensive: it takes more time, money, and is more difficult to organize. But it can also be more creative and unusual, and it will be easier for the team to immerse themselves in the process.
The most advantageous option is to combine off-site and in-office events.
How to get the result?
- Ideally, planning and executing team building events should be handled by a specialist. An experienced organizer is a major plus for effectiveness.
- Team building activities should be held regularly. It doesn't have to be frequent, but once is definitely not enough. Consistency is key.
- Thorough preparation. Formulate the goal, objective, and topic, plan out what will happen, and what you want to achieve as a result.
- A format that suits the given goal and the specifics of the team.
- Analysis and adjustments during team building events, both by organizers and participants.
