Why are different types of team building activities important? First, variety. It's good when a team regularly tries something new. This will have a positive impact on all areas of the work. Second, different activities have different effects, and therefore produce different results.
Team building can be classified in different ways, for example:
- by location (indoors, outdoors);
- by season (summer, winter);
- by age (children, adults, mixed);
- by method of interaction (offline, online);
- by degree of activity (active, calm);
- by frequency of events (classical, thematic);
- by nature (training, creative, quest, gaming, extreme, sports, psychological).
Indoor team building can be held in an office, conference room, restaurant or bar, hotel, gym, motel – in any available space.
Outdoor events can be held in the city center, in a park, by the sea, in the forest, in the mountains, or at a recreation center, both domestically and abroad.
Everything depends on the purpose of the event and the expected results. The main thing to decide is whether your event is sporting, psychological, or creative. All other classifications are either included in one of these categories or logically follow from it.
Sports team building
This is probably the most popular of all types. Most people, when they think of team building activities, picture sporting competitions. It's no surprise, as they were the first to appear.
Team building began to develop in the 1960s. It drew inspiration from American military training, specifically from exercises that promoted teamwork. Both military personnel and team members must be able to unite against a common challenge, despite potential disagreements. When people play as a team, their thinking begins to shift. So the changes from this type of activity are more psychological than physical. The most important thing to gain from sports competitions is team spirit.
Therefore, the event should be planned so that the emphasis isn't on physical fitness. It's important that the goal can only be achieved with the participation of all team members. This could be a relay race or a team game like football or volleyball. Or you could organize something more extreme: rock climbing, paintball, or rafting. The stressful conditions the team will face will cause participants to unconsciously drop their social masks. Everyone will see how the other person behaves in an extreme situation and how they cope. And the more dangerous the chosen sport, the more unexpected situations will arise along the way, which the group will also have to overcome together.
Psychological team building
This type doesn't require physical activity or an unusual setting, so it can even be conducted right in the office. (Of course, such trainings can also be carried out in an informal setting, subject to the organizer's discretion.) The main goals of psychological team building are:
- replace rivalry and competition with partnership work;
- to show employees that by working together they can achieve better and faster results;
- introduce a new format for team activities;
- Make respect for colleagues, responsibility for one's decisions and actions, team cohesion, and the ability to find a compromise the main characteristics of the team.
Such training sessions should involve people from the same department or team—in other words, people who know each other personally. While sporting events can bring together people who don't know each other well, it's important to improve the performance of those who interact most regularly.
Psychological team building can last for a couple of days or be held regularly and frequently to ensure employees understand all the ideas. The main problem here can be a lack of trust between colleagues. In a competitive environment, it's difficult to rely on others. But that's precisely what you should strive to achieve.
Creative team building
This type of activity allows each participant to discover new abilities and maximize their creativity. But this doesn't mean such trainings are only suitable for creative professionals. Quite the opposite. If someone is forced to constantly engage their imagination at work, they might benefit from taking a break and instead throwing a ball or rowing down a river.
Examples of creative activities: quests, drawing, cooking, dancing, music, theatrical performances (improvisation is also a great option).
