After a bit of brainstorming over the design, you can createwebsite, choose the appropriate onedomain, reliable hosting, and then everything works automatically: the search engine shows users your site, they go there, choose, click “buy”, you send the product and receive the money.
Seems very simple, right? In reality, not quite.
And the statistics confirm this: the majority of newly opened online stores close within the first year, despite a seemingly excellent idea and business plan.

Like any business, online stores face fierce competition. Getting your business off the ground requires time, effort, and innovative thinking to stand out from the competition.
The good news is that with some effort, success is entirely possible. The key is to focus your efforts in the right direction.
Today we'll discuss some important considerations when launching an online store. But first, a little background on the e-commerce market.
How are things going with e-commerce?
Sociologists report that the e-commerce market is rapidly gaining momentum. Over the past five years, e-commerce sales have grown approximately threefold, and are expected to double again in the next five years. The main reasons for this growth are cited as increased internet accessibility, the growing number ofmobileusers and all sorts ofapplications, simplifying the purchasing process, increasing trust in digital payment systems, and restrictions on movement associated with the coronavirus pandemic.
Since the onset of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, visits to the main Ukrainian marketplaces have increased, although the number of purchases has decreased. The decline in purchases is understandable and justified: many people have lost their jobs and homes, and many have been forced to leave Ukraine in search of safety for themselves and their children. User demands have expanded from purely personal needs to those of the military and those affected by the war and in need of assistance. As the situation in the country stabilizes, so will the market. And information from the front gives optimistic hope.
How to start a business?
As we've already mentioned, people are increasingly shopping online every year, and this method of purchasing will continue to grow. Therefore, e-commerce is a promising trend. But before you start creating an online store, it's important to understand what, to whom, and how you want to sell. To get started, here are several steps:
1. Set a goal that is optimistic but realistic
Psychologists say that success is achieved by unrealistic optimists. Lofty goals are wonderful, and it's a good idea to aim for them when starting out. However, you shouldn't get too carried away in the moment. First, you need to understand your current market, take a look around, and determine who you'll be selling to and what you'll be selling to. Choosing the right niche is crucial.
Many startups fail due to incorrect market analysis, selection of a niche, or method of entering the market.
For example, if you decide to sell sneakers, you'll face stiff competition from established brands, both large and small. This makes it much more difficult to attract the attention of potential buyers. All other things being equal, people are more likely to buy a familiar Nike than an unknown brand of unknown quality. To attract attention in this market, you need to offer something fundamentally new: shape, material, eco-friendliness. Or a unique marketing proposition, such as replacing old sneakers with new ones from your brand. Only an unconventional, creative solution will help you attract attention. This doesn't mean you shouldn't try, but you need to understand that it won't happen quickly, and don't get your hopes up.
2. Determine your target audience
Don't try to do everything by offering everything to everyone. That's a dead end. Not everyone will become your client. If you think otherwise, you'll simply waste time and money offering people something they don't need. The more accurately you define your audience, the more accurately you'll be able to meet their needs and be one step closer to your own success.
3. Select a product
Once you've determined who you want to sell to, you need to figure out what to sell.
To understand your target audience's needs, the first step is to research your competitors' offerings. This will help you navigate your chosen niche and understand what's in demand. This can be done by simply entering a search query for your product or service into a search engine and analyzing the search results. For a more detailed, in-depth analysis, you can consult with a specialist.
4. Take care of SEO
The importance of SEO is often underestimated. Furthermore, it's associated with many misconceptions. For example, you should launch your website first and only then think about SEO settings. To avoid having to rush to resolve any issues that arise during development, it's best to take care of your SEO settings upfront. The better prepared you are, the higher your website's ranking in search results.
We have already written about this earlierSEO is not a quick process.and requires some extra upfront work. But it's worth it. There are three main SEO tactics:
- Technical SEO is the most important, as it's search engine optimization. It affects how a website is indexed by search engines, and therefore whether your target audience will see it. Technical SEO includes sitemaps,meta tags, indexing JavaScript, links, keywords, etc.;
- On-Page SEO is the optimization of individual website pages to improve rankings and attract more relevant search engine traffic. On-Page SEO applies to both the page's content and HTML source code. Using keywords and offering high-quality text to the user...
- Off-site SEO is the process of building external links, blogging, and other off-site activities that help improve rankings and visibility.
5. Take care of advertising on social networks
When launching an online store and starting sales, it's important not to forget about social media advertising. By registering and maintaining active accounts on popular platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn, you attract more attention and increase brand awareness. Furthermore, seeing someone you know following your page or commenting on your posts can help people trust you more.
